Why you never forgot it

It wasn't just your street. It was the whole country.

The pogo ball started with two Belgian inventors and became a full-blown American fad when Hasbro sold it as the Pogo Bal. If you had one, you had a lot of company.

A Belgian patent is granted to inventors Raphael J. Van Der Cleyen and Wilfried F. Ribbens.

Flybar calls its Trick Ball "a new twist on a retro classic." Same squeeze-and-bounce idea. This one has textured grip tape on the deck, a hand pump in the box, and lights on the Glow designs.

History for context only. This is Flybar's toy, not the original Hasbro Pogo Bal.

Who this is for

You had one as a kid. When you saw this, you had to get them one.

It's the story buyers tell most often. Then the real questions start: can my kid learn it, where can they use it, and will it actually tire them out?

Had one in the 80s or 90s

You still remember the tricks.

One parent put it best: "Super nostalgic for me." Expect to be the one who demonstrates the see-saw warm-up. It's rated to 160 lbs, and several parents in the reviews admit they took a turn.

Endless energy

Rainy days need somewhere to go.

One parent wrote that their 6 year old loves it "to get his energy out, especially on rainy days when we can't get outside." On a hard, dry floor it works indoors. Fair warning: it's loud.

Loves a challenge

It takes practice. That's the point.

For kids who've "mastered the pogo stick" and want the next thing. Balance first, then hops, then the spins and tricks in Flybar's manual. Some get it in minutes. Others need a few sessions.

Soft-Fill Setup

Not as easy as you remember? Let some air out.

Pumping the ball as hard as it goes feels right. Don't. A rock-hard ball is harder to balance on, and overfilling is one of the ways buyers say their ball went lopsided. Flybar's own manual puts it plainly: "The less air in the ball the easier it is to control the Pogo trick Board."

1

Fill to the line, never past it

While you pump, keep the lip of the ball below the edge of the deck, and stop at the maximum size on Flybar's ball guide. An adult should do the pumping.

2

Start soft

A softer ball is easier to control, per Flybar. That's where the first sessions and the see-saw warm-up belong.

3

Add air as they improve

"More air in the ball will give you bigger jumps but makes it harder to balance." Top up a little at a time once the hops look steady.

Balls lose air over time, so Flybar says to refill before each use and keep the pump handy. Quotes are from Flybar's Pogo Trick Board owner's manual.

Where will they bounce?

Pick a spot. See what Flybar's rules say about it.

Flybar's rule is a solid, flat, clean, dry and well-lit surface. Tap where you're planning to use it.

Good fit: hard floors indoors

Solid, flat and dry is exactly what Flybar asks for, which makes this the rainy-day and winter setup. Keep shoes on. One warning from a buyer: it sounds "like someone dribbling a basketball in the house."

First day, step by step

Pump it soft. See‑saw. Then hop.

  1. Pump it (adult job)

Set the flat ball in the deck with the Flybar logo and air hole facing up. Push the needle straight in, all the way. Keep the ball's lip below the deck edge as you fill.

  2. See-saw first

One foot on one side, the inside of the foot pressing the ball, one edge on the ground. Bring the other foot over and rock side to side to get used to squeezing the ball with both feet.

  3. Then a hop or two

Once they're balanced, try a hop or two. If it feels wild, let a little air out. Softer is easier to control.

  4. Add air, add tricks

Top up a little at a time for bigger jumps. Flybar's starter tricks: spin while bouncing, bounce forward down a path, swing your feet to touch the board.

Helmet, shoes, grown-up nearbyFlybar's manual: always wear a helmet and other protective gear and athletic shoes, and bounce with an adult watching.
Top up before each useBalls lose air over time, per Flybar. Keep the pump with the board so a quick top-up is easy.
Store it out of the heatKeep it indoors and out of direct sun. Buyers have reported balls warping in the sun and after sitting in a garage.

What buyers say, both ways.

Patterns from public reviews of the Flybar Pogo Trick Ball. The happy buyers have a kid who never stops moving, and often had one themselves. The unhappy ones mostly had a problem with the ball.

  • The whole family gets into itKids race each other, and the grown-ups join in: "we're all jumping around the house on this thing."
  • Real balance practiceBuyers say it "definitely helps with balance," and kids who get it go looking for tricks.
  • The grip tape helpsOne reviewer calls it "the sandpaper stuff." Another says the gripped deck helps you stay in place.
  • It gets played withOne parent says it was "his favorite birthday gift." Another says the kids "loved this more than any other toy they own."
What to know
  • A lopsided ball is the top complaintSome balls went egg-shaped after overfilling, after time in the sun, or within days of use. Soft-fill it, store it inside, and contact us within 30 days of delivery if yours arrives or goes out of shape.
  • It loses airFlybar says balls lose air over time and to refill before each use. Some buyers report leaks, including one at the seam where the ball halves meet. Flybar sells replacement balls.
  • There's a learning curveSome kids bounce in minutes. Others need several sessions. "You can easily fall on it," one grandparent wrote. Start soft, see-saw first, wear a helmet.
  • Smaller than some expectAbout 15.5 x 11 x 9.5 inches overall. A few buyers wished the deck were a little wider.
  • Ships flat, and it's loudPump it before you wrap it. Push the needle straight in, since bent needles are the usual pump complaint. Indoors, it sounds like a dribbled basketball.

Questions before you buy

Does it come inflated?

No. The ball ships flat, with a hand pump and needles in the box, and Flybar recommends an adult does the pumping. Set the ball in the deck with the Flybar logo and air hole facing up, push the needle straight in all the way, and keep the lip of the ball below the deck edge as you fill. Gift tip: pump it before you wrap it.

How much air should I put in?

Less than you think. Flybar's manual says "The less air in the ball the easier it is to control," while more air gives bigger jumps but makes balancing harder. Start soft, never fill past the maximum size on Flybar's ball guide, and add a little air as they improve. Balls lose air over time, so top up before each use.

Is it the same as the Pogo Bal from the 80s?

No. The Pogo Bal was a Hasbro toy. This is Flybar's Pogo Trick Ball, which Flybar calls "a new twist on a retro classic." The idea is the same: a rubber ball through a plastic deck that you squeeze with your feet and bounce on. Flybar's version has a textured grip-tape deck, a hand pump in the box, and lights on the Glow designs.

How long does it take to learn?

It varies. Some kids are bouncing "in just minutes," others need several tries to find their balance. Most kids are bouncing within a few sessions, and mastering tricks takes practice. A softer ball is easier to control, per Flybar, so start there.

What ages and weights is it for?

Flybar labels it for ages 6 and up and rates it to 160 lbs. Several parents in the reviews admit to trying it themselves. The 160 lb limit applies to everyone, and so does the helmet.

How big is it?

About 15.5 x 11 x 9.5 inches overall, per retailer listings. A few buyers found it smaller than they expected and wished the deck were a little wider.

Can they use it inside? What about carpet?

Yes, on hard, flat, dry floors. Flybar's manual asks for a solid, flat, clean, well-lit, dry surface and rules out loosely covered ones, so skip loose rugs and mats. Flybar doesn't say anything specific about carpet. Indoors, expect noise: one buyer compared it to "someone dribbling a basketball in the house."

What if the ball goes lopsided or loses air?

It's the most common complaint about this toy, so here's what helps: don't overfill, top up before each use, and store it indoors out of direct sun, since buyers have reported balls warping in the sun and after sitting in a garage. Flybar sells replacement balls. If yours arrives misshapen or fails early, contact us within 30 days of delivery under our return policy.

Do they need a helmet?

Yes. Flybar's manual says to always wear a helmet and other protective gear and athletic shoes, and to bounce with an adult watching. Keep it away from streets, parking lots and anywhere cars go.
